York’s Hidden Spaces – Wheldrake Wood

Join us as we discover hidden green spaces in our blog series

We're near York for our hidden green space this month, in a small wood to the south east of the city

At Move the Masses HQ we’re always keen to find new green spaces to explore. This spot is a favourite with Move Mates staff and volunteers and is perfect for exploring with families and dogs.

This is the seventeenth blog in our series – check out the others here. Don’t forget to let us know if you visit anywhere new as a result – we always appreciate comments and photos! Likewise, if you have anywhere you think others should know about, please get in touch and we’ll feature it soon: hello@movethemasses.org.uk

Happy exploring!

How to find Wheldrake Wood…

This woodland area is 10  miles south east of York City Centre.

Show location on Google Maps.

There is a small car park at the site. The nearest bus routes go through Wheldrake Village or Elvington Air Museum. Both of these would require a walk to the woods. In nearby Wheldrake Village, our staff recommend The Wenlock Arms pub for a drink or meal and Caffe Valeria for excellent coffee and Sicilian desserts.

The main path is surfaced and level, suitable for wheelchairs and buggies.

This a popular place for dog walking.

The woodland is maintained by Forestry England.  You can find more information about the site here, including information about other local woods. Don’t forget, if you decide to visit as a result of this article, please take a photo and let us know!
