Walking, nature & creative expression!

Exploring the relationship between mind and body in Durham

Move Mates Durham recently hosted a walking and creative writing workshop.

The day focused on nature walks inspiring creative thinking and writing. The event highlighted the physical and creative benefits of nature.

Durham Project Manager, Hannah went along and shares her experience with us.

The walk: exploring nature & learning along the way

We met at Merryoaks Community Hall before setting off on a gentle walk. The group ventured off-road to explore new areas, and we were lucky the weather was clear.

It was fascinating to learn about the flora and fauna along the way from a Forest School leader who joined us.

Creative writing workshop

When we returned to the community centre following the walk, we tucked into tea, coffee and cake. This was a great opportunity to chat and refresh ahead of the next phase…

Creative writing session led by published poet, Katharine Goda!

The various activities were fun, interactive and engaging, sparking creativity (and many laughs).

Katharine read from different poems, and helped guide us in our own poetry writing.

It was a unique and special experience being able to express thoughts and feelings in this way.

My favourite was writing on pebbles...

We also made hanging wooden ornaments to leave somewhere in our local area for others to enjoy while out on a walk.

So look out for them if you’re near Durham – you might find one!

Thank you Katharine!

The workshop was a great success.

We’re looking at offering more events to combine walking, nature and creativity.
