Leed’s Hidden Spaces – Armley Park

Join us as we discover hidden green spaces in our blog series

We're in Leeds for our hidden green space this month, this time it's Armley Park!

By Mercy Okusun

At Move the Masses HQ we’re always keen to find new green spaces to explore. If you know of a spot near you let us know, we’d love to hear about new places!

Our new volunteer, Mercy, let us know about this place. This is the thirteenth blog in our series – check out the others here. Don’t forget to let us know if you visit anywhere new as a result – we always love to hear from you! Likewise, if you have anywhere you think others should know about, please get in touch and we’ll feature it soon: hello@movethemasses.org.uk

Happy exploring!

Armley Park is a serene oasis that offers a much-needed break from the urban hustle and bustle. This hidden gem is great for nature enthusiasts, families, and those seeking a peaceful spot. With beautiful greenery and thoughtful amenities, Armley Park promises a delightful experience for all who visit.

Armley Park offers several attractions and facilities including: playground, football pitches, tennis courts, open grass areas, wildflower meadow areas (my favourite), woodland and canal side trails including a section with 161 Victorian steps.

How to find Armley Park…

The park is 2 miles west of Leeds city Centre, on Stanningley Road.

Show location on Google Maps.

Several bus routes conveniently serve the park. Bus routes such as X6, X11, and 72 provide a straightforward way to reach the park.

There is disabled parking access and parking is free for everyone.

The nearest toilets are located in the Golf Club at Gotts Mansion and are open to public use.

They are clean and well-maintained.

The park is dog friendly on and off the lead.

The park is partially suitable for wheelchair access. The primary circular path around the park is well-maintained and relatively level.

Did you know…

Armley Park has amazing views overlooking the Kirkstall Valley.

The park spreads across approximately 14 hectares in area and was taken over by Leeds City Council in 1928. It has a 999 year lease for the use of leisure activities by the inhabitants of Leeds!

Armley Park is managed by Leeds City Council and maintained by Friends of Armley and Gott’s Park. Their dedication ensures that the park remains a welcoming and well-kept space for visitors. The meticulous upkeep of the park’s landscapes and facilities reflects their commitment to preserving its natural beauty for generations to come.

You can find more information about the park reserve here.
