Move Mates Stories: Janet and Gerri

Janet hits her goal of walking to Haxby

Janet and Move Mate volunteer, Gerri, have been walking together for six months

Janet was referred to Move Mates by the City Of York Council Falls Prevention Team. She had a long term goal of walking to Haxby and has just achieved that goal. Janet says her walks with Gerri are a positive part of her week, and she enjoys their chats about trees and nature.

Gerri volunteers with Move Mates as she feels passionate about helping people to keep active, in fact you may have seen her on our social media doing exactly this by delivering Move Mail around York on her bike.

She tells us that she and Janet have been incredibly lucky with the weather on their Friday walks as they haven’t had a rainy one yet!

They both enjoy discovering new coffee shops together and taking the time to enjoy the outside world.

“I enjoyed reaching my goal of walking to Haxby. It felt lovely, it was great!

Janet and Gerri followed the success of reaching Haxby on their walk with a charity shop browse and a coffee before getting the bus back home.

At Move Mates we love to hear about people getting moving and celebrating their goals with them.

The work of Gerri, and our other awesome volunteer Move Mates, is what makes this happen.

As a retired single person I like to use my time in the community”
