Move Mates Stories: Margaret and Lizzie

Margaret looks forward to her weekly walks with her Move Mate, Lizzie.

Lizzie has been meeting Margaret for a weekly walk for over a year

Margaret first heard about the Move Mates service when she joined in with one of our Acomb Wellbeing Walks. She was delighted with the suggestion of having a walking buddy. Margaret loves getting out and about, both in the local area and further afield. She particularly enjoys being out in the countryside. Knowing that she has a longer weekly walk planned with Lizzie means she is keen to get out for shorter walks on her own so she stays active.

Margaret sometimes feels she is walking slowly and she really appreciates Lizzie’s patience. She explained that it becomes more tempting to stay in and watch television rather than making the effort to go out.  However, once she is out and walking with Lizzie she feels better immediately. At Move Mates we know that for some of our walking buddies, maintaining their health and mobility is the most important aspect of their weekly walks.

“It’s certainly keeping me active. It’s been a lifesaver for me!

“I get a tremendous amount of pleasure and exercise.

Margaret told me that if anyone reading this is thinking of volunteering with Move Mates, she would say, ‘Yes please!’

Our volunteers get a lot out of volunteering too. Lizzie enjoys the walks as Margaret has introduced her to new areas to walk in and around York. She says, ‘It’s great to hear and share stories.’
