Join us as we discover hidden green spaces in our blog series
We're in York for our hidden green space this month, in a small woodland nature reserve
At Move the Masses HQ we’re always keen to find new green spaces to explore. If you know of a spot near you let us know, we’d love to hear about new places!
One of our York volunteers first discovered this area on a Bike Belles ride and she revisited with her family. This is the twelfth blog in our series – check out the others here. Don’t forget to let us know if you visit anywhere new as a result – we always love to hear from you! Likewise, if you have anywhere you think others should know about, please get in touch and we’ll feature it soon: hello@movethemasses.org.uk
Happy exploring!

How to find Moorlands…
The nature reserve is in between the village of Skelton and the town of Haxby, just outside York.
Show location on Google Maps.
Car parking is allowed on the verge near the entrance gate to Moorlands, but space is limited. There is also space to lock bikes to the fence here. There are bus routes running from York to Haxby, and it’s about a mile from the Mill Lane stop to Moorlands.
The site is accessible for wheelchair users and pushchairs, although it may be muddy at times. No dogs are permitted on the reserve.
Did you know…
The woodland nature reserve is part of the Ancient Forest of Galtres. This royal forest was established just to the north of York early in the Roman period.
There are loads of different plants to be spotted. In spring there are snowdrops, primroses, daffodil and bluebells. There are also mature rhododendrons, azaleas and maple.
